Nepal experiences four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each season offers unique conditions for trekking.

Spring (March to May)

Warm temperatures and occasional rain showers characterize this season. While the skies can be dusty, the mountains are often visible, and the rhododendrons—Nepal's national flower—are in full bloom, making forest trails especially beautiful.

Summer (June to August)

This is the monsoon season, with heavy and frequent rainfall. Trekking is less popular during this time, except in regions like Upper Mustang, Humla, and Dolpa, which lie in the rain shadow of the Himalayas and remain unaffected by the monsoon. However, unpredictable weather in the lowlands can disrupt travel plans.

Autumn (September to November)

Considered the best time for trekking, autumn offers clear skies, excellent mountain views, and pleasant daytime temperatures. At lower altitudes (1,000–3,500 m), temperatures range from 20°C during the day to 5°C at night. At higher altitudes, daytime temperatures hover between 15°C and 20°C, dropping to -10°C at night. Mornings are typically clear, with clouds forming in the afternoon and clearing at night to reveal stunning starry skies.

Winter (December to February)

Trekking is ideal below 3,500 m during winter, as the days are clear and pleasant, though nights can be cold. Above 3,500 m, trails are often snow-covered, and temperatures are about 10°C colder than in autumn. High-altitude passes (above 4,000 m) are usually closed from mid-November to mid-March.

Popular Trekking Months

  • October and November: These are the most popular months for trekking, with clear skies, great visibility, and comfortable temperatures.
  • March and April: Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and good mountain views, though the skies can be dustier.
  • May: While lower altitudes can get hot, May is still a good time for trekking, with a higher chance of rain.

Monsoon Trekking

Trekking during the monsoon (June to August) is less common due to heavy rains, but the landscapes become lush and green, offering stunning scenery. Rain-shadow areas like Upper Mustang, Humla, and Dolpa are exceptions, as they remain dry and are ideal for summer trekking.

Summary

The best time to trek in Nepal depends on your preferred altitude, weather conditions, and the type of experience you're seeking. Autumn and spring are the most popular seasons, while winter and monsoon offer unique opportunities for those willing to brave the challenges.
